Interns add value to variety development

For the past several years, Sun World has hosted interns from various countries and the Company remains committed to having additional young people spend time at its Bakersfield, California Research & Development Center.

Jarryd Montague

Sun World has hosted two interns -- Steyn Neethling and Gabriel Viljoen – from South Africa, and this season hosted Jarryd Montague from Australia. All three young men were raised in the horticulture industry and their families are licensed Sun World producers.

Research interns assist with evaluating new fruit selections and work in the Company’s post-harvest laboratory and commercial test blocks. The program is not only a great learning experience for the interns, but it has brought considerable energy and ideas to Sun World’s California research operations.

Jarryd, who is associated with Montague Fresh in Australia, worked for 8 weeks this season with Sun World's Stone Fruit Commercial Testing Program, harvesting commercial test trees and taking data on the fruit. "It was great to see how things are done in a different part of the world", noted Jarryd, "and I learned a lot about judging the qualities of fruit varieties".  After leaving Sun World, Jarryd traveled to London to intern with UK marketers for the rest of the season before heading home.

Seasonal Shots for June and July

The Seasonal Shots Section of sunworldfruit.com has been updated through the end of July, including the early grape season for the San Joaquin Valley and mid-season plums.

This year is shaping up to be a record year for grapes at Sun World. According to Sun World's Guy McGhie, Cultivar Development Specialist, The MIDNIGHT BEAUTY® (Sugrathirteen) is predicted to top out at nearly 2000 cartons per acre with outstanding berry size.

Going into mid-season for plums, most markets are flooded with black plums. Sun World's Suplumthirtyone offers a unique yellow plum alternative during the mid-season doldrums. Sun World stone fruit breeder, Terry Bacon, feels that Suplumthirtyone has good market possibilities. "Many growers have shied away from yellow plums because they have a reputation for marking. There are special requirements for handling yellow plums, but today, where there is a market, resourceful growers tend to find a way to tap it".

SCARLOTTA SEEDLESS™ joins Sun World’s list of branded seedless grapes

Color development, SCARLOTTA SEEDLESS
vs Crimson

After more than a year of deliberation, Sun World’s late-season red seedless grape, Sugranineteen, finally has a name.  SCARLOTTA SEEDLESS™ was selected by a panel of judges as the name of the late season, red grape. “The process was extremely difficult” says David Marguleas, Senior Vice President Licensing and Corporate Development who was one of the five judges.  “Not only did we have to find a name which played off the color attributes of the variety and could be used consistently with our other brands, but it also had to be protectable in the U.S. and other countries where we will seek trademark registrations.”

Sugranineteen is a late-season red grape in Crimson season with naturally large size and the ability to develop full red color in regions where Crimson struggles to develop color (see photo).

The brand name SCARLOTTA SEEDLESS™ will be used beginning this fall for all sugranineteen grapes.
