Welcome to Guy McGhie, New Sun World R&D Cultivar Development Specialist!

New on staff at Sun World R&D, Guy McGhie has accepted the position of Cultivar Development Specialist (CDS).  Guy is originally from Zimbabwe where he operated a large family farming operation. He attended Natal University in South Africa specializing in Agriculture.  Guy relocated recently to the United States with his wife and two children to work with a professional farm management company. Since arriving in the United States, Guy has worked managing apple and cherry production in Washington State before relocating to the Bakersfield, CA area to manage almond production.  He accepted the position at Sun World R&D in September.

The role of Cultivar Development Specialist is diverse and is intended to be a bridge between the breeding work of Sun World R&D and the needs of the grower.  The role of the CDS is to:

  • thoroughly evaluate the commercial quality and potential of new stone fruit and table grape varieties developed at Sun World R&D.

  • develop important information on new cultivars needed by growers regarding production, pack out, size breakdown, and post harvest quality.

  • develop optimum production guidelines for each new variety and develop Grower Guidelines documentation.

  • design and manage cultural experiments on commercial orchards and vineyards to test cultural techniques, rootstocks, and treatments that might improve fruit quality and production.

  • manage and evaluate cultivar test blocks on commercial orchards and vineyards.

Sugratwentytwo New Late-Season Table Grapes at Sun World R&D.

Because stored grapes late in the season cannot compare with fresh-picked quality, Sun World R&D offers late-season table grape cultivars and there are many new late season varieties under evaluation.  Growers now have the opportunity to provide a fresh product late in the season so that buyers have a seamless supply from one hemisphere to the other.
