 Sun
World International licenses over 15,000 acres of fruit
production on five continents worldwide, but
our people make us what we are.
Product
development and worldwide licensing requires the efforts and abilities
of many like-minded individuals working together. David Marguleas (Senior
V.P., Licensing and Corporate Development)
leads the team and directs world-wide
licensing for Sun World
proprietary fruit cultivars.
The Research and
Product Development staff (pictured) is based in Bakersfield
California, and is co-directed by
Michael Striem (grape breeder), and
Terry Bacon
(stone fruit breeder). The staff includes:
Sharon Rosenthal
(laboratory manager),
Guy McGhie (Cultivar Development Specialist), who
coordinates commercial introduction of new varieties, Larry Okumoto (orchard and
greenhouse manager), Gary Lott (vineyard
manager) and Aldercy Cendana (Intellectual Property
Supervisor). We
are also very fortunate to have permanent field staff who have
been with us many years and are very experienced.
In the licensing division,
Andrew
Mansour (international licensing
manager) assists with managing the licensing program.
Internationally, Sun World R&D/Licensing is supported by
regional managers. Johan Jooste
is General Manager/Sun World-South Africa with responsibilities
for the African Continent, and
Bob Wickson is
Regional Licensing Manager/Australasia with responsibilities for
Australia & New Zealand. We also
employ
regional technical consultants in key locations worldwide to
provide technical support to licensed growers.

Sun
World's Research & Development Center,
located near Bakersfield, California, houses one of the world's largest table
grape and stone fruit breeding programs. The center is surrounded by a
180 acre (75 hectares) experimental farm on which tens of thousands of grape and stone
fruit seedlings are planted annually.
-Fruit Breeding:One-in-a-million
Additionally,
Sun World low chill stone fruit breeding program is located in the
Coachella Valley of southern California. The Coachella Valley,
like other low chill regions, is
an area where traditional stone fruit trees can not survive
because winters are too warm for them to come out of dormancy.

The
R&D Center houses an advanced Embryo Rescue Laboratory. Early-ripening stone fruit
varieties, and all seedless grape varieties have small
immature embryos that must be cultured individually in test
tubes in order to produce a hybrid seedling. The lab, directed
by Sharon Rosenthal, includes a tissue
culture preparation room, an embryo rescue and extraction room, a
seedling growth room and four climate-controlled greenhouses.

Sun
World's R&D Center also features a well-equipped Post
Harvest Laboratory,
where Sun World varieties and selections are carefully
evaluated, alongside standard varieties, for internal quality,
flavor,
and storability. Dr. Carlos Crisosto,
University of California Post Harvest Specialist, assisted in
development of this lab and its operating protocols. Fruit size, firmness,
sugar, acidity, juiciness, and storability are tested.
